Tom Green
Thomas Patrick Green Jr. was born May 27, 1942, in Newark, N.J., the oldest of four children. Green graduated in 1960 from Archbishop Carroll High School in Northeast Washington. He earned a bachelor’s degree in fine arts from the University of Maryland in 1967 and a master’s degree in painting in 1969.
Green taught at the Corcoran for 40 years. He was influenced by the Washington Color School that emphasized abstract, geometric paintings in bright colors. He is perhaps best known for his large paintings of colorful “glyphs” — big, curving, figures that resemble letters from a mysterious alphabet. His paint-spattered home studio was filled with them, and the American University Museum hosted an exhibition of Green’s work in 2011. Tom Green died in his home in Cabin John, Maryland, at the age of 70. |
